6 ways virtual events are different from webinars

Throughout the past months, event planners who used to host in-person events started going live on different platforms such as Zoom, Facebook and Youtube instead, and many experts are now creating online content that wasn’t present in this format before. Since the whole world is not moving with the fast pace of before, now is the time to create and inspire.

While webinars have become quite popular these days as they have advantages such as being easy and inexpensive to organize, they don’t really provide the full experience of an event to an audience that used to attend in-person events before.

That’s where virtual events come in handy.

What are virtual events?

Virtual events are the online counterparts to in-person events, with almost all the same components (except of course having everyone in the same physical venue together). While virtual events provide a full event experience as they can be conferences, summits, hackathons and a lot more, webinars are only one type of virtual events that doesn’t cover the wide spectrum of essential elements of an event.

Here’s how they’re different.

How are virtual events different from webinars?

1. Multi-tracks and full agenda

Instead of a single topic, limited by the time and programme of the webinar, virtual events can have a complete agenda that covers multiple tracks (tech, art, business, entertainment) just like the good old days. Several sessions can run at the same time, with one or multiple speakers delivering their presentations live or through pre-recorded videos.

2. Can run across multiple days

While webinars are only extended to a couple of hours or divided into a series of webinars at best, virtual events can last for consecutive days according to the agenda requirements. This makes it possible to create more interesting content, engage the audience better and deliver more value to stakeholders.

3. Real time networking

Yes, webinars do provide the feature of group chat; but networking is more about creating meaningful and professional connections with people that share your interests and are relevant to you. That’s why virtual events are built on effective networking that includes one-on-one messaging to speakers or other attendees, in addition to networking lounges where people can join discussions based on mutual topics and interests with others.

4. Interactive tools

Engagement and interaction is a multi-directional process. Attendees interact together, with the speakers, with the organizers, and vice versa. Using tools like live polls, Q&A sessions and a social feed, virtual events maximize interaction with and between the attendees so that everyone can have a memorable experience. On the other hand, this feature is negligible in webinars as the only interaction possible is through the chat.

5. User profiles and analytics

Data, data, data! The most powerful tool an event organizer can be equipped with to improve and enrich future events is valuable and relevant data on their event components, the attendees and the overall performance. In order to get any information on your audience for your webinar, you will need to use an external tool to create a form the attendees will fill. Some webinar tools offer simple registration, but it’s still somehow limited. While in a virtual event, attendees create profiles that showcase the significant information about them. As an event organizer, you can access the analytics dashboard that presents info on every aspect of your event, including the sessions, speakers, attendees and interactions.

6. Unique experience for each attendee

An amazing and unique experience – that’s what everyone looks for in any event they go to, and that’s what a virtual event creates using the personalized features it provides the visitors with. Attendees register and create their own personalized agenda with the sessions they are interested in. Based on their interests and skills, attendees are matched with like-minded professionals to connect with, and receive recommendations for sessions they might like.
